Module 2: The Review Process

Introduction

This second module will cover the more practical information regarding the Institutional Review Board. Because many students have never worked with the IRB before, there can be a good deal of confusion with regard to paperwork and the review process in general. This module should help to alleviate most of that confusion, resulting in a much more efficient processing of your application so that you may begin your research as soon as possible.

In Short...

The IRB process consists of a number of steps, outlined briefly here, which will be discussed in depth throughout this module.

  • 1st: The primary investigator completes and submits all IRB application materials
  • 2nd: The application copies are sent out to the Institutional Review Board Members who personally review each application
  • 3rd: The board members have a group IRB meeting on one of the scheduled dates and discuss the applications
  • 4th: A review form with reviewers' comments is written up and emailed to the primary investigator and faculty sponsor
  • 5th: If approved, the investigator begins research. Otherwise, additional materials are submitted to the IRB for later approval
